In 1896, in Paris, the son of a jewel dealer, Alfred Van Cliff, married the daughter of another stone merchant, Estelle Arpels. Soon after, Alfred teamed up with his wife’s brothers, Charles and Julien, and founded the jewelery firm Van Cleef & Arpels
